You know Ariel Winter, the 14-year-old actress who plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family?  Turns out, she’s has been removed from her home by a judge because of some serious allegations that she was physically and mentally abused by her mother!

Yikes.

Court sources tell TMZ that after her  guardianship hearing on Oct. 3rd, a judge determined the allegations that Ariel was being physically and emotionally abused by her mother Crystal Workman were serious enough that she should be in the care of her older sister Shanelle Workman. Crystal was ordered to stay 100 yards away from Ariel, who was rumored to be looking for emancipation from her mom so that she could be with her boyfriend.

Ironically, Shanelle herself suffered the same alleged abuse as Ariel, and was placed in foster care for more than 2 years after her own struggles with her mom.  I’m glad the court system is not letting this terrible cycle continue- and Ariel, who shows so much promise, can be safe.

The judge has set another hearing for November 20.
