Wyclef Jean has officially dropped out of the running in Haiti’s Presidential race this November.

The singer has withdrawn his candidacy for President in his home country he announced today.

“This was not an easy conclusion to reach; but it is one that was thoughtfully made, taking into account many, many competing factors and weighing the course that will best advance the healing of the country and help it find the quickest path to recovery,” Jean, 40 explained.

“Some battles are best fought off the field, and that is where we take this now,” Jean said, adding that he doesn’t regret his attempts to appeal the Council’s decision. “It’s not about my candidacy–this appeal was meant to address the shortcomings of the process for every Haitian. Though my run for the presidency was cut short, in this way, I feel it was not in vain; it’s something we can use to improve conditions for my Haitian brothers and sisters.”

Michael Douglas hit the red carpet last night with his lovely wife, Catherine Zeta Jones, in support of his new movie, ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps‘. Sources tell Pop Eater that Michael was riddled with fear, and found it difficult to speak.

“It’s cancer, of course he is frightened,” a friend of Michael’s tells Pop Eater. “He’s 65 years old and has everything to live for. His career couldn’t be better and his personal life with beautiful wife, Catherine [Zeta Jones] and kids Dylan and Cary, couldn’t be more perfect. Now this has come along and knocked the entire family off its feet.”

“He’s had an intensive course of radiation and chemotherapy to treat a tumor in his throat,” an insider tells me. “It’s left him feeling very tired and sometimes finding it very difficult to even speak. In a few weeks, we fear he won’t be able to eat or swallow.”

At the premiere, Michael rushed past photographers, not stopping to pose for many pictures. He also rushed past the many TV crews and reporters without saying a word–making everyone wonder just how well the star was really doing.

“He is in a no-win situation,” a studio source tells me. “If Michael didn’t show up, everyone would be talking about him. Yet at the same time if he did show up, the press would see for themselves that he isn’t doing so great.”

Friends of Michael tell me his family and loved ones are all trying to be as optimistic about the outcome as possible, but at the same time, staying realistic. “We all understand this is stage 4 cancer and we are not taking that lightly. Michael is trying to enjoy every moment of the time he has with his friends and family and taking nothing for granted. He was determined to attend this premiere. Nothing, including cancer, could have stopped him.”

Paris Hilton is holed up in a Japanese hotel right now, after being detained at the airport when she arrived early this morning. She’s not being allowed to enter the country in connection with her guilty plea in her cocaine case.

Paris Hilton, who flew to Japan on business, was detained by immigration as she departed the plane. They’re allowing Paris to stay in the hotel until the matter is resolved.

Paris’ rep tells TMZ, “Paris Hilton was delayed by immigration authorities at a Japanese airport this evening after arriving for business obligations planned many months earlier.  Paris was contractually bound to her business trip and didn’t want to let down her brands and many Asian fans.”

An employee at the Consulate-General of Japan in NYC tells TMZ … Japan is strict about letting people into the country with recent drug convictions but these matters are handled “on a case by case basis.”

Paris’ rep added … she will fulfill her contract but right now things are beyond her control.

We’re told there was a conflict within the ranks of those who questioned Paris — some of whom felt it was for show.

Paris Hilton was set to tour Asia this week to visit some of her 7 Asian Paris Hilton stores and unveil her 2010 Fall/Winter collection. The collection includes handbags, watches and her new fragrance ‘Tease’. Paris Hilton is scheduled to hold fashion shows and press conferences in Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. She is also expected to visit her existing stores in Malaysia and to the official Grand Opening of her latest store in Jakarta, Indonesia.
