Backlash over Angelina Jolie being cast as Cleopatra!

Even though the author of the biography “Cleopatra: A Life” hailed Angelina Jolie as the perfect choice to play the Queen of the Nile, the feeling is not mutual for some people.

On many African American blogs and message boards, people are slamming the decision to cast a white woman in the role.

The author of the biography “Cleopatra: A Life” may be hailing Angelina Jolie as the perfect choice to play the queen, but some folks aren’t so sure.

Essence.com recently featured a commentary titled, “Another White Actress to Play Cleopatra?” where the writer opined, “Honestly, I don’t care how full Angelina Jolie’s lips are, how many African children she adopts, or how bronzed her skin will become for the film, I firmly believe this role should have gone to a Black woman.”

Clutchmagonline.com points out that the Egyptian royal has already been portrayed by three actresses who were not of color: actress Claudette Colbert in 1934, actress Vivien Leigh in 1945 and the most famous Cleopatra to date, Elizabeth Taylor in 1963.

Stacy Schiff, author of the forthcoming “Cleopatra: A Life,” reportedly endorsed Jolie to play the role according to USA Today. “I think [Jolie] be perfect for it and I can see a possible Oscar in her future,” the writer said. “Physically, she’s got the perfect look.”

Rumor has is that Brad Pitt is in talks to play Mark Anthony, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

I went to CNN’s Marquee Blog, and with over 600 comments, the debate is certainly heated. Here are just a few comments posted there:

Goodness, some people need to read a history book.

Although there are many Egyptians who are of color, Cleopatra was not. that fact is obtainable in any clear history book. Cleopatra was the daughter of puppet pharaoh controlled by the Romans. he was not a native egyptian, and neither was his daughter. cleopatra and her entire line were romans. i.e. italian. so having an actress of color play her role would not be appropriate in the least.
if african americans would like to claim someone as representative of their heritage, cleopatra is not the one. she was not the glamorous figure hollywood has made her out to be. her roman puppet family was not fighting the caesar to obtain freedom for their egyptian subjects; they were fighting for power, money and control. before you shoot your mouth off about something, read a book.

First of all, Cleopatra was neither African nor of Egyptian descent. She was of Greek heritage. The bigger problem with Angelina Jolie portraying Cleopatra or any of the other actresses in the past who have, is that they are too beautiful. It is known that Cleopatra was rather unattractive, just very powerful.

And my personal favorite…

Really I think Adam Lambert should play Cleopatra. Hollywood has gone gay now days so he would fit the Bill, LOL!

Personally, I think Angelina Jolie is a terrible actress. Yeah, sure she was good in the Changeling, but all she did was cry the whole movie. And sure – she won an Oscar for being crazy in Girl, Interrupted, but you kind of got a sense that she wasn’t really acting in the first place… that she was actually really crazy herself.  I think her best movie was her debut film, Gia. After that, I gotta say – I’m not that impressed with her acting. I could watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith every day, but lemme say that is for reasons that have nothing to do with acting. :)

What do you think of Angelina Jolie being cast as Cleopatra? Do you have a problem with it?

Music Review: Mumford and Sons

A friend asked me a while back if I had heard of Mumford and Sons, and even though the name sounded familiar, I couldn’t place them. Then a couple weeks ago, I was in my car when I heard their song Little Lion Man come on the radio. I sat in my car completely and absolutely HOOKED to the song. When the DJ said it was Mumford and Sons, I literally came home and downloaded Sigh No More immediately.

I have loved the CD so much, I can’t think of a single song on the album I don’t like. Little Lion Man is my favorite, but Winter Winds, Roll Away Your Stone and Dust Bowl Dance are equally amazing. If you haven’t heard of Mumford and Sons, you should definitely check out their album, I promise you won’t be disappointed!

This CD just makes you feel good. I put it in when I’m alone, and I blast it. It just makes you tap your toes, and bop your head. You won’t be able to help it! Watch the video for Little Lion Man below, and tell me you didn’t move your head!

Check out their website for more information!

Biography - Since they formed in December 2007, the members of Mumford & Sons have shared a common purpose: to make music that matters, without taking themselves too seriously. Four young men from West London in their early twenties, they have fire in their bellies, romance in their hearts, and rapture in their masterful, melancholy voices. They are staunch friends – Marcus Mumford, Country Winston, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane – who bring their music to us with the passion and pride of an old-fashioned, much-cherished, family business. They create a gutsy, old-time sound that marries the magic of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young with the might of Kings Of Leon, and their incredible energy draws us in quickly to their circle of songs, to the warmth of their stories, and to their magical community of misty-eyed men.

The album begins with the extraordinary title track, Sigh No More, a statement of intent that references the romantic language of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, as they sing: “Love it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you / It will set you free / Be more like the man you were made to be.” Amongst darkly reflective tracks such as Thistle & Weeds and ballads like White Blank Page, Winter Winds and Roll Away Your Stone, by contrast, show the band’s sprightlier side, the rollicking banjo of the former conjuring up stormy weather that “litters London with lonely hearts”; the latter a fabulous hoedown about a man unsuccessfully filling the hole in his soul.

As the album moves on, this fervour never dies. Little Lion Man – a track that Zane Lowe named the “Hottest Record In The World Today” on a recent Radio 1 show – is a rampage about regret and unresolved heartbreak: “Tremble, little lion man / You’ll never settle any of your scores / Your grace is wasted in your face / Your boldness stands alone among the wreck”. And finally, after a wild lashing out in the murderous fable of Dust Bowl Dance, After The Storm arrives, the only track Mumford and Sons wrote in the studio, away from the live stage they knew so well. It stands an incredibly moving final track to an incredibly moving album – the story of a man scared of what’s behind and what’s before, and creates a considered conclusion to the band’s epic debut album.

Mumford & Sons’ live reputation goes before them, and now their incredible debut reveals the extent of their magic and majesty on record. Feel the fire in your belly and the romance in your heart as you listen, let your voice break into rapture – and you too sigh no more.

Jonah Hill opens up to Rolling Stone about his gnarly scar!

Jonah Hill, star of Get Him to the Greek and Cyrus, opens up in the current issue of Rolling Stone, revealing his childhood traumas and burning ambition.

Hill reveals — for the first time — the origin of the mysterious scar on his right arm.

There’s an old, angry scar on Hill’s right arm that spiders past his elbow — too big and deep to hide. It looks like his arm was torn in half and then pulled back together, which is more or less what happened. “This is one of the biggest things ever in my life,” says Hill.

When Hill was in middle school, his mom was battling cancer. Convinced that she was going to die, he started acting out (she’s since made a full recovery). He took up skateboarding, started smoking weed. His grades were bad. “I was, like, not a good kid,” he says.

Hill was 15 when it all came to a head. He and a friend snuck out one night in an SUV. Hill stuck his elbow out the open window as they headed into the night, and his friend started turning the wheel back and forth, joking around. The car flipped over, skidded along the road and dragged Hill’s arm with it.

Hill woke up in the hospital, and he heard two doctors discussing whether or not to amputate his arm. At the same time, he saw his dad and ailing mom crying. “I said to myself, ‘I’ll never let them down ever again.’ I said, ‘I’m going to be f*ckin’ successful. I’m going to resurrect what I put these people through by being a little a**hole.’ So I look at this scar every day. That reminds me to work hard.”

Hill also has other, less-visible scars. “Every teacher I ever had told me I was never going to be anything,” he recalls.

Cyrus looks absolutely hilarious! Check out the trailer below!

With John’s social life at a standstill and his ex-wife about to get remarried, a down on his luck divorcee finally meets the woman of his dreams, only to discover she has another man in her life – her son. Written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, the iconoclastic filmmaking team behind Sundance Film Festival favorite The Puffy Chair, Cyrus takes an insightful and funny look at love and family in contemporary Los Angeles.

Still single seven years after the breakup of his marriage, John (John C. Reilly) has all but given up on romance. But at the urging of his ex-wife and best friend Jamie (Catherine Keener), John grudgingly agrees to join her and her fiancé Tim (Matt Walsh) at a party. To his and everyone else’s surprise, he actually manages to meet someone: the gorgeous and spirited Molly (Marisa Tomei).

Their chemistry is immediate. The relationship takes off quickly but Molly is oddly reluctant to take the relationship beyond John’s house. Perplexed, he follows her home and discovers the other man in Molly’s life: her son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill). A 21-year-old new age musician, Cyrus is his mom’s best friend and shares an unconventional relationship with her. Cyrus will go to any lengths to protect Molly and is definitely not ready to share her with anyone, especially John. Before long, the two are locked in a battle of wits for the woman they both love—and it appears only one man can be left standing when it’s over.

Using the innovative improvisational techniques that have earned them critical accolades and a devoted following, Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass enter the mainstream with a touching, original story that blends humor and heartbreak, much like life itself.

Padma Lakshmi: “I’ve eaten a lot of testicles in my days.”

Hey, I didn’t say it…she did!

Celebrity chef-turned-TV personality Padma Lakshmi isn’t afraid to try odd food. The Top Chef host offers up a little too much information, if you ask me. “I’ve eaten a lot of testicles in my days…I’ve had bull’s cojones…I’ll try anything once.”

Padma had a baby girl named Krishna in February. She has refused to name the father of her baby, but recent reports suggest he’s venture capitalist and Columbia Business School teacher Michael Dell.
