A year after discovering he had a rare form of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, ‘Survivor: Africa’ winner Ethan Zohn has weathered the storm and is now happy to learn his cancer is in remission.

“A few weeks ago, we got his first clean CT scan,” his girlfriend Jenna Morasca, winner of ‘Survivor: Amazon,’ tells PEOPLE. “Now we can officially call him ‘in remission.’ We were so nervous for this test because good news on this test meant we could start our lives again.”

Zohn learned he had Hodgkin’s on April 30 of last year after months of itchiness and night sweats. Doctors discovered a swollen lymph node under his left clavicle, and a CT scan discovered a mass on his chest. He soon learned he was suffering from a rare form of Hodgkin’s called CD20-positive Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

After several rounds of chemotherapy to treat the rare disease, he learned in August that the cancer had come back. “The last clean scan we got was good, but then we had to enter the stem cell transplant,” Morasca says, “which was quite a long and daunting process.”

He got the ultimate good news in April, when a nurse delivered the results of his latest CT scan. “I cannot begin to explain the happiness and relief we felt,” Morasca recalls.

Now that his cancer is in remission, Zohn will be starting work on a new show called ‘Outside Today’ for the Outside Television network. He’ll also be spending a lot of time working with Grassroot Soccer, the charity he started with his ‘Survivor’ earnings.
