Mel Gibson isn’t denying that he muttered “a**hole” under his breath during a testy interview with Chicago entertainment reporter Dean Richards — but his vulgar outburst wasn’t directed at Richards.
On Wednesday, Gibson, 54, sent a text message to journalist Sam Rubin of KTLA, explaining that the “*a**hole” in question was his publicist. During the TV interview, the actor’s rep was “making faces” at him off-camera. The Edge of Darkness star didn’t realize he was still on camera when he tossed off the insult to his colleague.
During a Wednesday appearance on French TV show Le Grand Journal, Gibson smiled when a reporter asked if he came prepared with “French curse words for French journalists.”
“No,” he replied jovially. “It usually comes out in English if I’m angry. I have a short fuse. I’m trying to work on it.”
During his talked-about Friday appearance on WGN-TV, Gibson seemed to get annoyed when Richards asked if the public might perceive him differently “after all that’s been in the news,” referring to Gibson’s drunken anti-semitic rant during a 2006 DUI bust.
“That’s almost four years ago, dude,” Gibson snapped at the time. “I’ve done all the necessary mea culpas. Let’s move on.”

Jennifer Aniston, 40, is through with famous men, says an insider, who notes that the actress was left “really messed up and heartbroken” by singer John Mayer.
“She wants to be set up with a wealthy businessman, not a celebrity,” the insider says in the new issue of Us Weekly, on newsstands now.
Though her rep says Aniston “does not place restrictions on the people who may come into her life,” the insider says pals like Courteney Cox are hoping she’ll settle with an “older, mature man.”
Still, one pal doubts the resolution will stick: “She always ends up drifting back to actors and musicians. Her friends want a normal guy, but she’s drawn to the attention.”

Jersey Shore’s Jenni “J-Woww” Farley, 28, is quitting one of her bad habits: smoking.
The MTV reality star — who just signed on for a second season — has been spotted puffing on SmokeSticks, an electronic cigarette that doesn’t contain tobacco or cancer-causing carcinogens, but still creates smoke.
Says the press release, “J-WOWW may be trash on the outside, but she certainly isn’t trashing her insides.”
She isn’t the only Jersey Shore actor who is cleaning up her act.
Us Weekly Fashion Director Sasha Charnin Morrision gave Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, 21, a polished makeover.
“I feel like my grandmother!” she whined after seeing the final results: a shift dress, pouf-less ponytail and low-key makeup. “I wouldn’t be caught dead in this outfit. If I had to go to court, I’d wear this. That’s about it.”
Charlie Sheen will be charged with felony menacing in connection with the Christmas Day incident with his wife, Brooke Mueller, in Aspen … this according to law enforcement sources.
We’ve learned in addition to the felony, Sheen — who stars in “Two and a Half Men” will be charged with misdemeanor assault.
We’re told the criminal complaint will be filed either late tomorrow or first thing Monday morning.
Charlie Sheen is set to appear in court Monday for an arraignment, though we’re told he is not expected to enter a plea.
In addition to the arraignment, the judge will hear arguments from lawyers for Brooke and Charlie to relax the protective order prohibiting any contact between the two.
Charlie Sheen’s lawyer had no comment.

Was it love at first sight when Carrie Underwood met her future fiance Mike Fisher in October 2008?
The country star isn’t saying, but when the pair were set up by friends to meet backstage at a Toronto concert, Underwood fretted about the hockey player.
“I made sure he came in with some other people,” she says in the March issue of Cosmopolitan magazine. “I was like, ‘what if he’s weird?’”
The matchmaking worked, of course: Underwood, 26, and Fisher, 29, confirmed their engagement Dec. 21 of last year. The singer has been flashing her flawless yellow diamond ring by Jonathon Arndt– worth about $150,000 — during the current awards season.
Underwood tells Cosmopolitan that Fisher “provided a lot of inspiration for songs” on her new album Play On, “whether it was something he said or just by being supportive.”
The busy couple hopes to have their wedding sometime this summer. And though she’s got a new tour coming up and just signed on to star in her first film Soul Surfer, Underwood maintains that she wants a work/life balance. “I didn’t want to be one of those people who has an amazing career but ends up alone and unhappy,” she tells Cosmo. “I want to be happy. I want it all.”

Talk about pressure!
If training for this weekend’s Super Bowl wasn’t stressful enough for New Orleans Saints’ Reggie Bush, his girlfriend’s family is now on the offense!
“I did put some pressure on him,” Kim Kardashian’s stepdad Bruce Jenner tells UsMagazine.com. “I told him, ‘Our family already has one Olympic gold medal and one NBA ring, so if you want in, it’s going to cost you a Super Bowl ring or maybe even an MVP at the Super Bowl!’”
Jenner, of course, is referring to his gold medal for the decathalon in 1976, and Khloe Kardashian’s husband Lamar Odom’s top prize for winning the NBA championship this year with the L.A. Lakers.
“We are a tough crowd!” Jenner joked to us at the COPD charity event in NYC Wednesday. “So he’s still got a ways to go.”
If he were to join the family, Jenner wouldn’t be too disappointed.
“I really like Reggie,” he says. “He’s a good guy — quiet, articulate and soft-spoken. He’s not really what you expect from a football player … I can definitely see the [Reggie and Kim] sneaking off somewhere are [getting married] privately.”
Although Jenner says “it wouldn’t surprise me” if he and Kim, 28, got married, he understands that Bush’s mind is on a bigger priority.
“Right now Reggie is only worried about one ring, and it’s the Super Bowl!” he tells Us.
