Dakota Fanning celebrated her 16th birthday with a low-key dinner with friends and family in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

The War of the Worlds star – who will mark the milestone age on Tuesday – hosted a sweet 16 bash at Beverly Hills hotspot Villa Blanca with around 40 guests, including her parents.

Fanning was presented with a three-tier chocolate mousse birthday cake during the celebrations, according to E! Online, and partied until 11pm with her pals.

A source tells the website, “She looked like she was having fun and was really cool. She was talking to her friends and laughing all night.”

Paris Hilton is considering marrying Doug Reinhardt.

The socialite – who turned 29 last Wednesday – belatedly celebrated her birthday with ‘The Hills’ star in Las Vegas on Saturday and admitted she couldn’t be happier.

When asked if they were planning to wed, she said: “We’ll see what happens in the future, but right now we are so happy to be together and we are really in love.”

Paris and Doug were joined at nightspot Tao by her parents Rick and Kathy Hilton, who appear to have given their daughter’s romance their full backing.

During the evening, Paris tweeted: “Vegas is crazy! I’ve never seen Tao so packed! It seemed like it was New Year’s Eve! GREAT Night!

“What a fun night! My mom and Doug were so cute dancing together! I love how my parents love my love! We all had a blast! Great night! (sic)”

Doug also took to twitter to gush about the family occasion.

He posted: “What an amazing night with Mr. and Mrs. Hilton along with my beautiful princess.”

Jessica Simpson’s father reportedly blasted John Mayer in a furious phone call.

Joe Simpson is said to have lambasted the ‘Gravity’ singer over his recent comments to Playboy magazine – in which he described the singer-and-actress as “sexual napalm” – and warned him never to contact, or even speak about, the blonde star ever again.

A source said, “Joe took it upon himself to call John up directly for a ‘man to man’ discussion. Joe didn’t tell Jessica ahead of time because he knew she’d object. The conversation was pretty one-sided. Joe told John that he best not even think of uttering Jessica’s name again. John put up a feeble defense – he tried to reason with Joe that he was praising Jessica, not insulting her. But no father wants to hear from an ex-boyfriend about how hot his daughter is in bed – and Joe told John as much. Joe told John to stay away from his family and man-up and apologize for his comments.”

John – who dated Jessica for nine months until May 2007 – has reportedly attempted to make amends with his ex-girlfriend, but his efforts have so far been unable to win over her protective dad.

The source added: “John did email Jessica and tell her he was sorry if the interview offended her. But regardless of whether Jessica is willing to forgive and forget – Joe Simpson isn’t ready to make amends. He’s holding a massive grudge against John. But there’s no reasoning with Jessica’s dad. He didn’t like John when Jessica was dating him and likes him even less now.”

Taylor Lautner has signed up for ‘Abduction’.

The ‘Twilight: New Moon’ actor has been attached to the action movie, in which he plays a boy who discovers his parents are not who they seem.

Upon figuring out why he has felt disconnected to his mother and father, the movie enters ‘Bourne’-style action.

It is the latest in a string of action movies he has signed up to – Lautner is to play the lead in Universal’s ‘Stretch Armstrong’ and Paramount’s ‘Max Steel’.

In an effort to make sure there is time for Lautner to star in ‘Abduction’, sources have told Deadline Hollywood the studio Lionsgate are hurrying to find a director and finish off the script in time for July.

Lautner recently turned 18, and instead of promoting his latest movie ‘Valentine’s Day’, which had its UK premiere on the same day, he took some time off from the Hollywood scene.

He said: “I’ll spend time with family and friends… I don’t like to do anything huge, but it is 18, so, it’s kind of a big one I guess.”

When a grassroots campaign involves both Facebook and a beloved Golden Girl, the scope of its influence cannot be underestimated. To wit: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Saturday Night Live is thisclose to signing TV legend Betty White to host the show for the very first time.

But there’s a catch — and a pretty cool one at that.

White would not be hosting alone. Rather, I hear SNL is putting together a “Women of Comedy” episode that would team the former Rose Nylund with several of her younger contemporaries. Ex-SNL MVP Molly Shannon is on board, I hear, and feelers have also been put out to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. (An NBC spokesperson insists no one has been confirmed at this time.)

This tag-team approach will allow Lorne Michaels to appease White-on-SNL zealots (half a million and counting!) without making the 88-year-old shoulder the burden of all 90 minutes on her own. And hey, anything that gives Fey an opportunity to dust off her Sarah Palin impersonation — as she’s rumored to be considering — is okay with me.

On her worst times:
“When my father was going public, that’s when I hit rock bottom. I abused substances too much and it wasn’t the answer to my problems.

On her coping mechanisms:
“I tried to mask my problems with alcohol, cocaine, and mind-altering substances. Now I’m in a place where I don’t need to use anything and I feel emotions because I choose to.

On learning lessons:
“I never want to be close to losing everything I worked for and aspired to have my whole life. I’ve made some dreadful mistakes but learned from them – that has probably saved my life.”

On drugs:
“I was only aware of cocaine because of my dad. I was terrified of it. But I tried it because I was stubborn, stupid and wanted to see what it was like. It’s not something I ever want to do again. It made me feel like s**t. It became uninteresting to me. I’m hyper anyway and I have that kind of personality, so I don’t need something like that.”

On the reason for rehab:
“The first time I checked myself in because I had taken Ambien. It’s a sleeping aid but it makes you hallucinate.I’d run a bath and fallen asleep on the floor and it overflowed. When I woke up, I was so scared I called my therapist and said, ‘Can I just go somewhere for a month? I’m around bad people and I need to take care of myself.’ I was terrified, so I put my name in.”
