John Edwards is coming clean. The politician has finally admitted that he is the father of Frances Quinn — the two-year old daughter of Rielle Hunter, a campaign videographer with whom the married Edwards had an affair.
The former North Carolina senator and Democratic presidential candidate released a statement to NBC’s Today Show acknowledging his paternity, and his commitment to supporting the young girl, known as Quinn.
“I am Quinn’s father,” the confession begins. “I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves. I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace.”
Edwards, 56, has been married to Elizabeth Edwards for nearly 33 years. The couple had four children together; their eldest, son Wade, died tragically in a 1996 car accident. In August 2008, Edwards admitted his extramarital affair with Hunter (whom he met while campaigning for a 2008 presidential bid), but consistently denied being the father of her child.
Edwards’ statement continues: “It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me. I have been providing financial support for Quinn and have reached an agreement with her mother to continue providing support in the future. To all those I have disappointed and hurt these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry.”
The fallen politician has no plans to speak publicly today; NBC News points out that he is under investigation for spending campaign funds to cover up the affair, an accusation he has denied.
A rep told NBC that that Edwards privately acknowledged Quinn as his daughter long ago, but waited to make it public to protect his family. “He’s not doing this as a way to try to bring attention to himself…He’s doing this as a way…to begin to put this behind, not just him, but everybody else who’s been affected by this.”

Tara Reid and boyfriend Michael Axtmann were having dinner at The Little Door restaurant in Los Angeles on Monday night when Axtmann asked for something not on the menu: Reid’s hand in marriage.
“Michael surprised Tara with a beautiful round brilliant cut ring,” the actress’s rep tells People exclusively. “Tara was so happy, and the other patrons clapped and yelled out, ‘Congratulations.’”
Reid, 34, and Axtmann, an Internet entrepreneur, began dating last year. They are planning a small wedding for family and friends by this summer.
Reid, who posed for Playboy’s January/February issue, recently completed production on the comedy Last Call and the psychological thriller The Fields.

As previously reported, country singer Carrie Underwood makes her sitcom debut in March on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother.
Show regular Neil Patrick Harris posted a TwitPic of him with Underwood from the set. As womanizing character Barney, Harris is sure to ogle Underwood — dressed in a retro airline stewardess’ outfit, complete with an upswept ‘do, white boots and a polka-dotted scarf!
“This week’s awesome guest star: HIMYM – You’ll Love The Way We Fly! ” reads Harris’ caption, suggesting a saucy airline theme.
2010 promises to be a fab year of firsts for Underwood, 26: her first sitcom appearance and a wedding to fiance Mike Fisher sometime this summer.
Lady Gaga sure didn’t look – or sound – tired.
Following the cancellation of four previous shows due to exhaustion, the pop sensation unleashed a high-energy performance in New York Wednesday night as part of her Monster Ball Tour, and delivered the first of her four sold-out performances at Radio City Music Hall.
The singer, 23, put on quite the show for her hometown crowd, which included Sting, wife Trudie Styler, Donald Trump and, according to a source, Madonna and daughter Lourdes. She opened with “Dance in the Dark,” wearing a costume featuring lightbulb-like adornments, followed by “Just Dance,” with her playing a keytar and strutting onstage like a human disco ball.
“This, New York, is my first of four dates with you. So tonight I might not go all the way,” Gaga teased her audience before making a sexually explicit remark that drew roars.
Concertgoers, many in their own outrageous Gaga-esque outfits, were equally tireless throughout the show. They were on their feet for the duration, dancing and singing, effectively transforming the iconic locale into a pulsating nightclub. Gaga balanced out the visual- and production-heavy show with her powerful voice in the ballad “Speechless” and a torchy revamp of “Poker Face.”
Later, after putting a gay-friendly spin on “Boys Boys Boys” in a red bikini outfit, Gaga advised the crowd: “Don’t you ever let anybody tell you that you can’t be whatever you want. I was the little girl from New York that felt like a freak in high school.”

Following a trip to Botswana and South Africa last December to learn more about improvements made in the diamond mining industry, actress, fashion designer, and InStyle contributing editor Rachel Bilson was inspired to take matters into her own hands to promote the cause.
InStyle reports that the 28 year-old star has just created a bracelet to benefit the Diamond Empowerment Fund, a non-profit that supports education in Africa. The new Bilson-designed accessory strikes a nice balance between rugged and refined, comprised of earthy brown leather cords punctuated by a twisted gold charm that frames a dainty, sparkly round diamond.
It retails for $100, with $20 from the sale of each piece going to the Diamond Empowerment Fund to build student housing at the CIDA City Campus, a university in Johannesburg.
