Jennifer Lopez stars in the upcoming movie “The Back-Up Plan” about a woman who conceives twins using artificial insemination.

But Lopez told Elle magazine in their February issue that she decided to forgo in vitro fertilization treatments while trying to get pregnant herself.

“I … believe in God and I have a lot of faith in that, so I just felt like you don’t mess with things like that,” she told Elle. “And I guess deep down I really felt like either this is not going to happen for me or it is. You know what I mean? And if it is, it will. And if it’s not, it’s not going to.”

Lopez, 40, ended up having fraternal twins Emme and Max in 2008 through natural methods.

However the pop princess’s opinion that IVF is “messing” with God has irked some who underwent IVF to have children.

“She’s saying that if you deal with fertility issues then it’s because God doesn’t want you to have children and that’s offensive. In reality, if God didn’t want you to have kids then he wouldn’t have these opportunities available,” Jennifer Katz, who underwent IVF treatment in 2007, told Pop Tarts. “It’s not ‘messing’ or intruding in God’s plan, you go after things in life that you want and don’t sit back and wait for things to happen. God helps those who help themselves.”

Jerome Ballard, whose wife had IVF, said their decision to turn to reproductive assistance only made their faith stronger. “I am Catholic, but I believe in life if you want something, you have to make it happen yourself regardless of whether you believe in God,” he said. “We had faith in what we were doing, and IVF was there to help us.”

Numerous blogs have also attacked Lopez over her comments. However, two IVF proponents contacted by Pop Tarts stand by Lopez’s right to her opinion and principles.

“I can’t speak about her personal choices, but I think that we live in an era of reproductive freedom and everybody is welcome to reproduce in whatever way they wish,” fertility specialist Arthur Wisot of Reproductive Partners in Southern California told Tarts. “If (Jennifer Lopez) isn’t accepting it, then it may impair her ability to have children in the future, but it’s based on her own moral and ethical principles.”

The American Fertility Association also stood by the starlet.

“[Jennifer Lopez] has stated that she would never consider in-vitro fertilization as an option since she is a traditionalist,” an AFA rep said. “We at the American Fertility Association, support Jennifer Lopez’s right to not use in-vitro fertilization or any other form of assisted reproduction in the creation of her family, just as we also support another person’s right to use this same technology.”

A rep for Lopez did not respond for comment.

What an idiot. So it’s ok to be a cheater, but it’s against her moral compass to use IVF? My friend has had health issues and can’t have her own children, so she adopted through the system. So because she can’t get pregnant on her own is it God’s plan is for her to remain childless?

I can’t stand her, I wish she would just go away.

January 11th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Agreed. Jennifer Lopez is arrogant and ignorant.

So if you’re not supposed to screw with nature, should we stop trying to cure cancer?

January 11th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Also can’t stand her. She can’t sing or act and is a repulsive human being. Furthermore, I don’t believe for a minute that she didn’t use IVF herself. You know what the odds are of a woman her age having twins without it?

January 11th, 2010 at 2:43 pm

As the Amish say, “Ask God to bless your food, but don’t expect Him to make your bread.”

To extend J-Lo’s “logic”, if you have cancer don’t get it treated because if God doesn’t want you to die, he’ll fix your cancer Himself. For that matter, if you want to get pregnant, don’t even have sex. If God wants you to be pregnant, he’ll simply make it so. Also, don’t adopt kids, because God obviously put them in the orphanage for a reason and you’d just muck it up and then there’d be nothing He could do about it.

January 11th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Wow. So you are all against the rules of ‘Natural Selection’? Really? We need natural selection to keep the population at bay and to keep things going naturally. Some people cannot have kids, they should adopt. That’s the way God would have wanted it (for all of you who want to get religious). God would have NEVER ok’d IVF, he would have rather you help your fellow man and children by adopting a child in need. Help those around you and in turn you are helping yourself. The sad truth is people who do IVF are usually too selfish to ever adopt cuz to them that child ‘is not theirs’. God would most definitely not like that. Lets not play the convenient morals card here ladies. Everyone is entitled to an OPINION and if you have the gall to get religious think about The Bible and Gods Word before you type some nonsense. Getting IVF is not what God meant by ‘Helping ones self’, helping ones self would be taking a break from trying to get pregnant and putting the signs together. God sends us messages and they are usually not in word form.

There is not one bit of doubt in mind that Jennifer Lopez used medical assistance to get with pregnant with twins at age 40. Ridiculous.

January 11th, 2010 at 3:14 pm

HA! I guess she’s against COSMETIC SURGERY too… after all, according to her stance, God “gives us” what we’re supposed to get, and we’re not supposed to mess around with that… what a dummy.

January 11th, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Way too many people putting words in God’s mouth here, but whatever. I think it would be great if Lopez came completely clean with her medical history around her pregnancy, just to show that there’s no hypocrisy in her statements. The chances of a 40 year old woman having twins given declining fertility rates with no assistance whatsoever… are not great, so if there was no additional medical assistance, well praise be. But if not – where does she draw the line, fertility drugs are ok, but IVF is not?

January 11th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

First of all, no one can say what God wants, because God is make-believe.

That being said, if you DO believe in God, and are devout, you would be against IVF just as most devout persons are against abortion. IVF leads to the death of multiple embryos per attempt. That’s probably hundreds of thousands of dead fetuses per year. Bu tit is amazing that the hypocrysy within those circles. Abortion=death of one fetus=HELL!!!
IVF=death of numerous fetuses= oh, that’s okay because you will raise them to be good christian children.
Whatever!

January 11th, 2010 at 6:46 pm

I don’t like her, she’s the usual pop-princess trash… But the the women who argues against her is just as specious… And JasonB, I don’t know many people who are OK with IVF but not OK with abortion- they go hand in hand.

January 11th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Melissa, I’m pretty sure you’re not god, so I have no idea where you get off telling other people what he meant. You’re no less fallible than anyone else.

January 11th, 2010 at 11:17 pm

heck next she’ll be telling us that she thinks that wearing animals is cruel…

Oh J-lo, go sit on your fat behind

January 11th, 2010 at 11:58 pm

She’s entitled to her opinion. Freedom of speech is a staple of a Democratic society. Stop talking of God as if he’s a concrete tangible item. Gods are personal things which more people should have more respect and humility for. My God’s an eight-legged, bug eyed transexual, what’s yours?

January 12th, 2010 at 12:57 am

Melissa, I was going to write a response to your post, but then I decided to take the high road…besides, you’re clearly an idiot and I don’t want to make you feel any more pathetic then you surely already do. Anyone who wrote the things you wrote is clearly damaged.

January 12th, 2010 at 2:58 am

Hypocrite as usual, double standarded. And btw we live in the 21st century if u see what I mean. I suppose the same god helped her sleep with Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes both while they were filming MONEY TRAIN? And the same god urged her to sleep with TOMMY MOTTOLA (among many others) in order to launch her musical career? Yeah, rite, pigs are flying so high…

January 12th, 2010 at 3:07 am

NO-one can seriously tell me that what she said was offensive at all – natural selection hear hear!!

January 12th, 2010 at 4:04 am

OMG nowai!~!!1 a celebrity said something dumb in an interview?

January 12th, 2010 at 6:40 am

Yeah, I’m pretty sure a 40 year old woman conceived twins “naturally.” Ugh, I hate her.

January 12th, 2010 at 6:49 am

She is pathethic! “I believe in God, blablabla” Bullshi**! If you realy do, don’t have to prove or show the world how ‘catholic’ and ‘puritan’ you are. Dumb a**!!

January 12th, 2010 at 7:16 am

What JLo said is dumb, but posters here are just as ignorant. In fact, the odds of conceiving twins INCREASES with age. So the fact that she had twins at 40 is not proof positive she required medical intervention. She was lucky to get pregnant at 40, and with that conception came much higher odds for twins.

January 12th, 2010 at 9:00 am

Oh Jenny from the block. I hope we find out that you used ivf yourself and are lying! What a nasty bitch.

January 12th, 2010 at 11:15 am

So she’s against it, yet she plays a woman who does it in a movie? It’s all about the money obviously. If she felt so strongly, she would have turned down the role. Does she realize that there are people who don’t pay attention to the news who will see the movie and think she supports IVF?

January 12th, 2010 at 12:27 pm

C’mon humans….calm down…calm down…don’t let your panty’s get tight on your clitoris….Jennifer Lopez has her opinion. Plain and simple.

January 12th, 2010 at 8:48 pm

Um…in response to Jennifer Katz retarded comment above….If God didn’t want you to have abortions he wouldn’t have made that possible either……

January 12th, 2010 at 11:51 pm

We used IVF because there simply aren’t that many babies to adopt. IVF was much less emotionally invasive and expensive than adoption (upwards of $40,000). Unless you are willing to adopt special-needs children (and more power to those who are), it is extremely difficult to adopt.

Additionally, where does anyone get the idea that embryos are destroyed during IVF? Multiple embryos are created, but most of those don’t survive on their own – just like in a natural cycle. Human reproduction is very inefficient, which is why it can take months for fertile people to conceive as well. Also – hop on an IVF forum sometime and you’ll see that very few women end up with embryos to freeze.

Unless you’ve been there, you can’t pass judgement.

January 13th, 2010 at 7:56 am

Having cancer is not the same as not being able to get pregnant. You won’t die because you can’t have teh babbies!!11

March 11th, 2010 at 8:46 pm

People can do IVF to get pregnant, if they want to. Its entirely their choice.

Get over it. Now.

October 27th, 2010 at 8:33 pm

It is like Jennifer Lopez thinks children born of IVF are not “God’s will”.

That’s what makes her evil scum. You don’t put down someone else’s child that way.

I don’t know why anyone would pay good money to see her big butt in a film anymore.

January 18th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

She’s an evil bitch, sure she’s entitled to her opinion and all we have free speech but to make comments like that while waving her two healty babies in front of the camera shows what a horrible, nasty, self serving cunt she is.
Fuck you Jlo.
I bet if she was in an accident she’d accept an organ and blood donation.
She is dog ugly too – her genes should not have been past on.

July 25th, 2011 at 11:07 pm

1 of 10 couples have fertility issues and this number is raising. She could be the one, then what’d she comment?
IVF is a normal medical proceedure that brings millions new babies to the world.

February 23rd, 2012 at 5:47 am

Give me a break, not using help to conceive those TWINS!! Her Doctors , nurses, and assistants must have things what a looser she is. Lying even where your kids came from?? What other things can you believe coming from her mouth. Just lies and lies. What else can you expect from this CELEBRITY. If that is what you call celebrity, she is just trash in trash out. Luck Ben for find a true and honest mother for his children.; Jennifer Garner.

Becareful JL, if you are not proud whatever God gives you, he takes away

October 9th, 2012 at 8:24 pm

Also, when an older woman has fraternal twins, that is a huge red flag that she used fertility procedures such as IVF or IUI. However, it is extremely unusual for a 39 year old to conceive twins naturally, or even with IVF.

She is not fooling anyone.

Also, I have to say her twins look nothing like her. Interesting.

October 14th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

The American Fertility Association needs to know, that NOBODY ever said J Lo should use in vitro. Its just silly that they would put that spin on it. What people DID say, was that J Lo shouldn’t be condemning other women who use in vitro.

There is a big difference. It is J Lo’s condemnation of other women that is the problem here. She was not being criticized for not doing IVF. Good grief.

June 2nd, 2013 at 2:20 pm

Stupid, breeding cunt. And your god isn’t real. If you want kids, you should adopt one of the thousands already born and suffering. If you wont because you neeeeed your very own bioloaf or adoption cost money and time, you don’t deserve to be a parent.
