Jake Gyllenhaal visited a string of prisons while researching his role in Brothers, and he was so impressive with the way young offenders are rehabilitated he keeps returning to help out with writing programs.
The Brokeback Mountain star, who plays a former juvenile delinquent in the film, spent time with convicted drug smugglers and murderers in an effort to determine what life behind bars is like for a teenager.
And he was so impressed with one writing program used to educate wayward teens, he now frequents a number of prisons on a regular basis in a bid to boost interest.
He tells Fox News, “My character (in Brothers) starts off in jail so I did a lot of research at LA County Jail, Lancaster State Prison and some juvenile state halls. I came across this incredible writing program for kids that are spending time in juvenile halls, 14 to 18-year-olds participate in this writing program and that really changed my perspective on the prison system and the people inside it. I have since been back many times to work on this writing program and with these kids. It’s so life changing and extraordinary.”

Simon Cowell wants to create a cartoon series.
The music mogul – who earned an estimated $75 million last year – is a big fan of animated show ‘The Simpsons’ but admits he is jealous of its worldwide success.
He said: “Their appeal is broad and it makes a lot of money. You kind of hate them for making so much money. It makes me physically sick knowing how much money they have made over the years. Maybe I should start a cartoon one day.”
Simon, 50, has previously made cameo appearances on the show – but admits he only took part to preserve his youth.
He explained on TV show ‘The Simpsons: Celebrity Friends’: “It’s the best thing to get the call. You last forever and are young forever on that show, so I love it. The only reason for doing it is to look good and stay young forever.”
The ‘American Idol’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ star recently signed up to make another appearance on the cartoon, despite admitting his last appearance didn’t go well.
He said: “They obviously hated me as I had to do it over and over again. I could actually feel the rolling of eyeballs. It was like, ‘After take 57 Simon could we have a little bit more reality?’ It was painful.”

Sienna Miller only agreed to vacation with Jude Law and his children if he left their nanny at home.
The ‘GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra’ actress joined the actor – whom she broke off her engagement to in 2005, after she found he had cheated on her with his children’s carer Daisy Wright – in the Caribbean, but only after he agreed to her ultimatum.
A source told the Daily Mirror, “Haunted by what happened the last time they were together, Sienna is leaving nothing to chance second time around. She wants her and Jude to work on their friendship first and foremost, and then see if love blossoms. But by the same token, she doesn’t want any reminders of his infidelity. So she’s made sure the children’s nanny has returned to England before she joins Jude on holiday in Bequia, from Barbados. Sienna wants it to be just her and the family, and for them to have a quiet, low-key celebration together.”
Jude is spending the festive period with his three children – Rafferty, 13, Iris, nine, and Rudy, seven – from his marriage to actress Sadie Frost as well as Sienna, which has reportedly upset his parents, as they don’t approve of him reconciling his romance with the ‘Edge of Love’ star.
Another source said: “They have made it abundantly clear he doesn’t have their blessing. They want him to be happy but think the two of them together is a recipe for disaster. They believe the relationship was a rollercoaster the last time and they were left to pick up the pieces when it finished.”

Tyra Banks is facing a backlash from disgruntled former employees after announcing the end of her talk show – the ex-supermodel has been reportedly branded “difficult” and “a diva” by TV insiders.
The catwalk queen-turned-daytime talk show host revealed earlier this week that the fifth cycle of her The Tyra Banks Show will be the last after five years and two Daytime Emmy Awards.
The former Sports Illustrated pin-up is planning to concentrate on developing shows and films under her Bankable Studios production company.
But the star, who also hosts the hugely popular America’s Next Top Model series, isn’t such a hit with her staff – with a show source telling the New York Daily News that working for Banks could be a tough task.
The insider tells the publication, “There had been a high turnover of employees for years… (it’s) pretty difficult to work for Tyra. She and the higher-ups on the production staff could be extremely brutal. She really is a diva. When the show moved from L.A. to New York, several staffers weren’t even directly told about the change. They heard through the grapevine it was going to move locations. Even so, a lot of those people gave up their lives on the West Coast so they could continue working for the show. Now they’re out of luck.”
Rumor has it that she’s ending the show because no one was watching. Were you?

Lady Gaga’s concert in Atlanta, Georgia was marred by an over-enthusiastic fan who threw a bunch of flowers into the singer’s face during an energetic dance routine.
The star was performing her hit Poker Face at the gig on Tuesday night when an audience member hurled a large bunch of blooms onstage.
But the fan’s enthusiastic throw nearly caused a dangerous accident after the flowers smacked Gaga on the head as she performed.
The Just Dance hitmaker refused to let the incident halt the gig, straightening up her hat and carrying on her routine until the end of the track.
