My Review: “Cougar Town”

Cougar Town, the new Courteney Cox comedy premiered last night on ABC. I had high hopes for this show, seeing as how Courteney’s last venture Dirt was rightfully cancelled by FX (it was TERRIBLE) and Courteney deserves a break. I actually really like Courteney Cox. She was one of my favorite Friends, and I’ve enjoyed many of her movies over the years. But to get right to the point – Cougar Town SUCKS. I think if I were to sum the show up in one word, I would use awkward. It’s just weird and awkward, and completely unfunny.
The show opens with Courteney Cox examing her naked body in the mirror, exlaiming “what is that!” when staring at her extra elbow skin. This gave me my one and ONLY laugh during the 30 minute show. Courteney Cox plays Jules the lonely, divorced, aging mother of a teenage boy (who was the only enjoyable character in the whole show), who fears she has lost her sex appeal.
When her hot neighbor, (who beds a new, young woman every night) tells Courteney Cox she could never “catch a young thang” if she tried – Jules decides she’s going to prove him wrong – and “go for it”. She heads to a bar with the annoying Busy Phillipps (man, I just don’t like her) and acts like a complete moron in the bar. If older women are this clueless – then just shoot me now, and put me out of my misery.
She snags a “young thang” that was, indeed hot, and he ends up back at her place. Again – more awkwardness ensues. Her teenage son, Travis (played by Dan Byrd) walks in on Courteney Cox going down on her young man. It was WEIRD! It’s just not funny! I think having your son walking in on you giving a BJ is just NOT funny, and doesn’t belong on TV.
I just hated this show. I’ll probably watch it again – just to see if they can make something of it, but the bottom line is the show was bad. It was awkward and weird, and just not funny. I feel bad for Courteney Cox – I was really hoping this show was going to be good.
Did you watch it? What did you think?
