My Review: “Cougar Town”

Cougar Town, the new Courteney Cox comedy premiered last night on ABC. I had high hopes for this show, seeing as how Courteney’s last venture Dirt was rightfully cancelled by FX (it was TERRIBLE) and Courteney deserves a break. I actually really like Courteney Cox. She was one of my favorite Friends, and I’ve enjoyed many of her movies over the years. But to get right to the point – Cougar Town SUCKS. I think if I were to sum the show up in one word, I would use awkward. It’s just weird and awkward, and completely unfunny.
The show opens with Courteney Cox examing her naked body in the mirror, exlaiming “what is that!” when staring at her extra elbow skin. This gave me my one and ONLY laugh during the 30 minute show. Courteney Cox plays Jules the lonely, divorced, aging mother of a teenage boy (who was the only enjoyable character in the whole show), who fears she has lost her sex appeal.
When her hot neighbor, (who beds a new, young woman every night) tells Courteney Cox she could never “catch a young thang” if she tried – Jules decides she’s going to prove him wrong – and “go for it”. She heads to a bar with the annoying Busy Phillipps (man, I just don’t like her) and acts like a complete moron in the bar. If older women are this clueless – then just shoot me now, and put me out of my misery.
She snags a “young thang” that was, indeed hot, and he ends up back at her place. Again – more awkwardness ensues. Her teenage son, Travis (played by Dan Byrd) walks in on Courteney Cox going down on her young man. It was WEIRD! It’s just not funny! I think having your son walking in on you giving a BJ is just NOT funny, and doesn’t belong on TV.
I just hated this show. I’ll probably watch it again – just to see if they can make something of it, but the bottom line is the show was bad. It was awkward and weird, and just not funny. I feel bad for Courteney Cox – I was really hoping this show was going to be good.
Did you watch it? What did you think?

I didn’t even need to watch the show and I knew it would be bad. Thanks for saving me the time (not that I would watch it anyway.) I like The Cox too, she’s a hottie. The problem with “Cougar Town” is that its trying to jump on this pop culture phenom that is “the cougar” but its really overused and annoying at this point. Plus I think its on its way out.

I thought it was pretty good actually. I loved the whole BJ scene. Is it just me? LOL. The deliberate awkward scenes just enhance how very new she is to the Cougar Life. Courtney seemed really sure of her character unlike some other new TV SHOWS that started this week… I won’t name names that would just be mean!

I couldnt agree with you more. You summed it all uo-Weird, awkward, not funny, and its gross that a mom talks about licking her sons schoolmates bodies. My husband and I both kept looking at each other thinking OMG this sux. Plus its so unbelieveable, because anyone of the men charactors in this show would have sex with her in a minute. Except the son of course. DUH. Remember Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore? He even had sex with the old old neighbor woman (like 60-70) LOL) ITS NOT that SCARY being a single 40 year old woman, really. Especially if you GOT GAME, geesh!

You didn’t find it funny because you can’t relate. I am 36 and divorced with three children and dating a 23 year old so I can relate! It is FUNNY!

I couldn’t DISagree more. I went into this show after Modern Family expecting to just watch maybe to the first commercial, but I was pleasantly surprised at how funny Courtney Cox was and it had me hooked the whole way through. Busy Phillips was refreshing, I thought – not your typical sitcom’ish best friend actor. Yeah it might not be that realistic, but this is just tv – who cares! It’s FUNNY! I really thought it was hysterical. I’ll watch it again for sure.

i agree. not funny at all! i thought it was one of the most lewd, disgusting shows on the air. i’m very surprised with abc and courtney cox. do our teenagers really needed to be exposed to more immoral, offense behavior?

Disgusting, vulgar, moraleless, pornographic. I turned it off after she had sex 3X with a guy whose name she couldn’t remember & the BJ incident, about halfway through. Never again. ABC should be ashamed.

It was disgusting. And for the 36 year old on here…with three children…dating a 23 year old…NICE example for your kids. Pathetic.

Cougar Town sucked. It just seemed very desperate to me. Pathetic and NOT funny. She just acts childish, desperate, ignorant….drooling over high school boys, etc. Yeah, not even realy worth my time to type this. It just sucks. Maybe it would have been funny if she was a 40 something single mother who decided to go to return to college. Perhaps then the younger man lust and feeling awkward would be funny and make sense.
