John Hughes, who directed iconic 1980s films Sixteen Candles (one of my favorite movies ever!!) and The Breakfast Club, died today. He was 59.
A spokesman for the filmmaker says he suffered a heart attack during a morning walk while in New York City visiting relatives.
Hughes’ directorial debut, 1984′s Sixteen Candles, became a teen cult classic and started Molly Ringwald’s career. She went on to star in his movie Pretty in Pink.
“I was stunned and incredibly sad to hear about the death of John Hughes,” Ringwald told Usmagazine.com in a statement. “He was and will always be such an important part of my life. He will be missed — by me and by everyone that he has touched. My heart and all my thoughts are with his family now.”
The Chicago native also directed Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and all the Home Alone movies, which made Macaulay Culkin a star.
“I was a fan of both his work and a fan of him as a person,” Culkin tells Us in a statement. “The world has lost not only a quintessential filmmaker whose influence will be felt for generations, but a great and decent man.”
Steve Martin, who starred in Hughes’ 1987 film Planes, Trains & Automobiles alongside the late John Candy, told Us the late director was an even better writer.
“John Hughes was a great director, but his gift was in screenwriting,” Martin told Us in a statement. “He created deep and complex characters, rich in humanity and humor.”

While he was wooing Jillian Harris on ABC’s The Bachelorette, Ed Swiderski was also texting then-girlfriend Lindsey Johnson he loved her, according to the new issue of Us Weekly (on newsstands now).
Contestants are supposed to relinquish cellphones during taping, but Johnson, 29, tells Us Weekly Swiderski, 30, frequently texted her. On April 8, he wrote: “Miss you.”
“We were in contact the entire time,” Johnson tells Us Weekly. “He kept saying he loved me and that he couldn’t wait to get back to me. All he said about Jillian was, ‘She’s not my type. I like tall blondes!’”
Adds Johnson, “I believed everything he said to me when, in actuality, he was saying the same things to Jillian at the same time.”
Swiderski’s other girlfriend, Bethany Steffen, has also come forth to warn Harris, telling Us Weekly that she slept with the Chicago Microsoft consultant just eight days after he popped the question to Harris.
Swiderski denies cheating on Harris, 29, who said on Wednesday’s Good Morning America that she believes his word that the ladies’ claims are “not true.”
But Steffen tells Us, “Lindsey and I are both smart girls, and Ed just has this way of making people believe what he wants. Jillian needs to be careful.”

Christina Aguilera has revealed that she is excited about her upcoming role in Burlesque.
The ‘Ain’t No Other Man’ singer will play a small town girl who finds success at a Los Angeles-based nightclub after owner Tess (Cher) takes her under her wing.
The project will mark Aguilera’s acting debut, though she had previously lent her voice to an uncredited role for the animated film Shark Tale.
The pair will both sing in the Screen Gems production being directed by Steve Antin, while studio president Clint Culpepper said that Aguilera’s part was written with her in mind.
“I finally believed in a movie enough and a script enough, and a director enough to sign on and do my first feature film,” she told The AP.
She added: “Cher will be starring with me, so it’s very exciting for me to step into that project and I’ll be taking it very seriously, so that’s actually what I am diving into filming over the next few months.”
Filming on Burlesque will begin in November.
