When it comes to shaping up Mischa Barton is nothing but serious. Currently in New York City to shoot the TV show The Beautiful Life, the actress has been hitting the downtown Equinox gym and even hiring a trainer.

“Mischa is really focused on getting into shape,” says a source with knowledge of the situation. Last month, the actress, 23, suffered a breakdown and spent several days in a psychiatric ward after police were called to her home in Los Angeles.

The focus on fitness might be just what Barton needed. “She has big self-esteem issues,” a source close to her told People last month. “She hates her legs. She isn’t comfortable with her body. It’s been a big source of stress and self-hate.”

Since relocating to New York City in late July, Barton has been trying to change that. “Mischa has been doing a lot of conditioning with weights as well as cardio on the treadmill, and some kickboxing,” says a source. “She’s been very consistent and she seems focused.”

It’s unusual to celebrate your first day back at work after a summer vacation, but that’s just what the cast and crew of How I Met Your Mother did this week.

They had plenty to celebrate: In addition to Neil Patrick Harris’s third consecutive Emmy nomination for best supporting actor in a comedy, the CBS sitcom nabbed its first nomination in the best comedy category – and stars Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders became mothers over their summer breaks.

Opting for orange juice rather than a champagne toast while backstage her husband Alexis Denisof looked after 4-month-old Satyana, Hannigan told People, “I’m so fortunate that she’s here. We set up a nursery, and daddy and baby are in nursery right now. So I can run off and get to see them when I have scenes off. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me! I’m so in love.”

The show’s Emmy nomination isn’t too shabby, either. “It’s so nice that it finally gets recognition,” she says. “Instead of being a little show, we’re finally like, ‘We’re in that club, we get to go to that party!’ ”

Hannigan says she’s narrowed her choice of gowns for the big night to two dresses. “This year, [my goal] is to make sure the boobs stay in. I have boobs now! They’re my new accessory,” she joked. “I want to make sure they stay in, and they stay dry.”

Harris’s Hosting Hitch
Costar Neil Patrick Harris, who is hosting the Emmys for the first time this year, has different things on his mind in preparing for the big night. CBS will air the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. ET

“I’ve thought about it an insane amount,” he says. “I know a lot of things that might happen, but nothing has been locked down.”

Harris says his hosting philosophy is to keep the show moving. “I’ve always been less enthusiastic [about] stand-ups [who] host, because they feel obliged to show how funny they are during the process,” he says. “I think it’s more about keeping things at a tight clip and making sure the audience at home is having a good time.”

With the MTV Video Music Awards coming up Sept. 13, Taylor Swift, who’s set to perform for the first time at this year’s bash in New York City, is looking for fashion inspirations.

“I think with the VMAs it’s all about color and being risky,” Swift says in an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the country starlet’s West Side Story-themed VMA promo, which will start airing on MTV on Friday night.

Whose style standard is she following?

“I think Rihanna has always been amazing at the VMAs,” she says. “Everything that she’s decided to do as far as fashion on the red carpet, she takes chances.”

Swift, 19, knows what she’s performing at the show – a fresh version of her song “You Belong With Me” from her hit album Fearless – but her outfits are another story.

“I actually have no idea what I’m going to wear for my performance,” she says, “or the red carpet so I better get on that.”

While she does not know who donated the kidney that potentially saved her life, Natalie Cole is on the mend and “really doing well,” the Grammy-winning singer said at Thursday’s Harold Pump Foundation Gala in Beverly Hills to honor Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Bill Russell.

“It’s remarkable what a new kidney does to your life. I have no complaints … I’m pretty amazed. I have been working on my stamina.”

Cole, whose transplant surgery took place in May, says, “I just went to the doctor today. He is thrilled. I’m just really, really thankful. I’m thankful to the doctors, I’m thankful to the family that donated the kidney.”

In terms of the support she received, the Los Angeles-based Cole, 59, says, “My sisters who live in Florida, they came out, my son, oodles of friends. I got sick in New York, I wasn’t at home. I didn’t know how many good friends I had until this happened. It was beautiful. I had people come and see me everyday to see me in the hospital for 10 days.”

Having already announced a Hollywood Bowl comeback performance set for Sept. 9, Cole says, “I only wish for anyone to have to go through this, that they have a circle of friends like I did. I was very blessed.”

Was Hard to Find Match
When it came to the medical procedure, she says, “It is hard to find a match. A lot of people want to donate a kidney, but they’re not in a position to because they have health issues of their own, and a lot of people need them. That’s why the list is long and it takes a long time.

“My friend was on dialysis for six years before he got a new kidney. I was on dialysis for eight months. I’m almost not even the typical person who has kidney failure.”

Thankful as she is for the gift, Cole is prevented from knowing who donated the organ. “I don’t know who they are. I have not met them, it’s all anonymous,” Cole says.

One thing she did know, however: the family specifically requested that the organ go to Cole. “That’s what was so awesome, their family basically requested that the kidney go to me,” she says. “We are not sure how they knew.”

Would she like to meet the donor? “Absolutely, are you kidding? I would probably kiss them all over the place.”

Hi everyone!!! So the other day I realized I needed a new look so I decided to go with the mommy haircut. I chopped off my hair to my shoulders!!!!! AHHHHHHH LOL.

I really like it…it’s so much easier to manage and in a few months I’m definitely not going to have much time to deal with my hair so this is definitely a great change

Police were called to Jon and Kate Gosselin’s $1.1 million home in Wernersville, Pa., Thursday after the reality stars got into a heated fight.

Kate arrived at the home (it was reportedly ex Jon’s time to be with the kids) because she did not approve of the babysitter. Photographers on site claimed Kate was “locked out” of her house.

No arrests were made, but she spent some time arguing with Jon at the fence of their home.

Later, she fled in tears to a nearby Days Inn.

Hiding behind dark sunglasses, Kate headed straight to her room. Her nose was red and it appeared that she had been crying.

Earlier in the day, a Live! With Regis and Kelly interview aired, during which Kate said her marriage to Jon could never be saved.

“You know, we definitely have different goals at this point,” she said. “A lot has changed, a lot of unexpected things have came up.”
