Lily Allen says she was so depressed after a miscarriage last year that she sought treatment at a mental health center.
Allen, 23, went to what she calls a “nuthouse,” a “psychiatric clinic,” according to an interview in the Daily Telegraph’s magazine.
“I stayed there for three weeks. I was really depressed because of the miscarriage and I’d kind of lost the plot a bit. It was quite a nasty time,” she says.
But, she adds, “It was quite nice being in there. No one could get to me; no one knew I was there.”
She has since split from boyfriend Ed Simons, a musician with the Chemical Brothers. “Maybe if I had stayed pregnant and had the baby then things would have worked out between me and Ed,” she says. “I don’t know. You could drive yourself insane thinking about it.”

Dakota Culkin, who died after being accidentally struck by a car Dec. 9 in Los Angeles, was “more than likely impaired due to alcohol,” Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner tells PEOPLE.
Culkin, 29, had traces of alcohol in her system, Corral said, although it wasn’t immediately known what her blood alcohol level was. Culkin, who had recently moved to L.A. to pursue a career in film production, had reportedly just left a Marina Del Rey bar before she crossed the street and was hit.
Culkin’s family also indicated to investigators that she’d been going to therapy for alcohol addiction, Corral said.
Shortly after her death, a manager for siblings Macaulay, Rory and Kieran Culkin told PEOPLE that the brothers were “absolutely heartbroken” over their sister’s passing.
