Anna Wintour on Vogue Documentary: “It’s Hard to Look at Yourself”

Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour had a difficult time watching herself in the magazine’s documentary, The September Issue, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on Saturday.
“It’s hard to look at yourself when you’re used to being on the other end of the camera,” Wintour told Usmagazine.com. “But I think people will enjoy it.”
The documentary, shot over nine months at the Vogue offices, followed Wintour and her staff as they prepared the year’s biggest issue.
“We’ve always been interested in doing a film that would focus on the creation of the September issue,” she told Us. “[Director] R.J. Cutler had complete freedom to put together the movie that he wanted. It’s not a Vogue film, but an R.J. Cutler film.”
Was there anything in the film she didn’t like?
“He showed us the film a little while ago and we made a few suggestions, all of which he’s ignored,” the editor, who wore her signature sunglasses through the entire film, joked.
When Cutler heard Wintour’s remark, he laughed it off: “I don’t think I ignored them all!”
The documentary’s debut marked Wintour’s first visit to Sundance, and she admitted that it was the first time she could wear jeans to a premiere.
“We asked if we could go to a restaurant last night that wasn’t too formal, and they said, ‘Well, everything is mountain-casual here,’” she told Us. “So I’m channeling mountain-casual.”
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at The September Issue.
