New Katy Perry interview with Star

Singer Katy Perry had a lot to celebrate when she turned 24 on October 25. Her singles “UR So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl” are worldwide hits and she’s getting ready to go on tour in January 2009. So Katy threw a “fantasy birthday party” at Siren Studios in Hollywood on Oct. 28 complete with a ghoulish Halloween theme. Over cocktails made with Malibu Rum, Katy — dressed as her idol Freddie Mercury from the rock band Queen — partied with family and friends and talked to Star’s Heidi Parker about what’s next.
Tell us about your costume.
I like to mix my style up between what you’d see on Dita Von Teese and Agnes Deyn. I blend classic and punk rock. But for this party I wanted to do something different. You can dress slutty 364 days out of the year but one day a year you have to be creative. Queen is my favorite band so dressing up like Freddie seemed appropriate though this mustache is a bit uncomfortable and my fake teeth are making me lisp.
Do you normally have such major birthday bashes?
Yes, I love to throw big parties. When I turned 21, I rented out a roller rink and had McDonald’s cater it — that was my favorite party ever! Last year I had a Mad Hatter dinner where everyone wore those Alice In Wonderland hats. I always like people to have a great time. That’s who I am. I want to have fun in everything I do — my music, my life, my touring.
Have you gotten any great birthday gifts yet?
Well, my music label gave me this Cartier gold bangle bracelet which I have always wanted. I was so happy! It’s a big gift. Normally you would expect something like this from a boyfriend, not your label!
Are you already working on another record?
I am always thinking of new ideas. I have a tape recorder that I walk around with all the time. I’ll be at the grocery store and be like, “I have a melody in my head, let me record it.”
Rumor has it Britney Spears’ ringtone is “UR So Gay.” What do you think about that?
I guess I can rest in peace. That’s just awesome. I like her music. I think “Toxic” is her best song ever. I think she can have her moments of just being a true entertainer and she always delivers. I wish her luck with her next album.
Earlier this year Madonna sang your praises on radio station KIIS FM. How about a duet with her?
That would all be up to Madonna because you know how Madonna is. Of course, I would welcome it.
Tell us about next year’s tour.
It’s a world tour. All over America, Japan, Australia, Europe. I have some exciting people opening for me too. It will still be at intimate venues, it won’t be at huge places. I’ll have like 1,500 people in the audience — so people can still see me.
