Javier Bardem praised with top Spanish accolade

Javier Bardem

Oscar winner Javier Bardem has been honored with the 2008 National Cinematography Prize in his native Spain, in recognition of his contribution to the country’s film industry.

The No Country For Old Men star was presented with the prize by the members of the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Art in Madrid on Wednesday.

In a statement released by the Institute, they say the accolade recognizes “the professional goals he has achieved throughout his long career, particularly in 2007, for his defence of the acting profession and for his constant commitment to Spanish cinema, at home and abroad”.

Accepting his honor, Bardem told the crowd, (This) is not only for me, but for all members of this profession that I love and that I try to defend day after day.”

Bardem became the first Spaniard to win an Academy Award when he was named Best Supporting Actor for his role in No Country For Old Men earlier this year.
