John Mayer doesn’t like the Guitar Hero games

John Mayer has slammed the Guitar Hero videogame phenomenon - claiming it makes it too easy for untalented people to enjoy the instrument.
The singer claims no game could ever replicate the joy he gets from playing the guitar for real, and urges fans to grab a real axe and learn to play for real.
Mayer tells RollingStone.com, “Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it. And having done both, there’s nothing like really playing guitar. I mean, what would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?”

Well, I’d rather drive a Ferrari, but since I can’t afford one, I’ll pretend by using the amusement park car. Same goes for Guitar Hero, I don’t have years to invest in learning to play, read music, etc, so I’ll pretend by playing the game. John is clearly out of touch with the reality that the masses are subject to (happens to many millionaires I’d assume).

John Mayer is such an A$$hole. I can play guitar just as well, if not better than he can, and I also like Guitar Hero. They are two completely different things. Also, some songs set on expert are actually harder to play on Guitar Hero than on an actual Guitar.

IT’S A GAME!
why are you trying to take away our imagination, John Mayer? why?

Sounds like he needs to lighten up. I don’t think Guitar Hero was designed to minimize “real musicians” and all the hard work and effort they put into playing guitar.

It’s a game you tool!! A GAME!!!

Shouldn’t he like the game since it encourages people to play the guitar. Wouldn’t he want the masses to learn more about music?!?!?! I guess his shit just doesn’t stink.

Well said “E”.

sounds to me like somebody is mad that none of his songs were considered for the games? sorry john, but elevator rock isn’t that fun to play along with.

If anything, I think Guitar Hero might make people pick up a real guitar after the play it. Maybe not everyone, but a few I’m sure.

The game captures the interest of a larger population than just listening. It allows a younger generation to be interactive with music.
My daughter knows and appreciates music from musicians like Metalica, Pat Benatar, and White Zombie. She’s 8 and probably would not otherwise be interested in these songs. The game has gotten enough of her interest where she’ll shift to playing real guitar soon.

I’m glad someone is saying it, and I hope more musicians take the same stand. Judging from the amount of time some people put into playing with a poor simulation of playing guitar they could be actually learning the instrument and enhancing themselves. It’s a sad commentary on our culture. And c, if you are half the axeman you say you are, you would never have made the statement you did about GH being harder - it doesn’t even play like a real guitar.

I don’t remember the same douchebags telling us to get a real gun when Duck Hunt came out who are telling us to get a real guitar now that Guitar Hero is out.

dude. it’s a game. get over yourself. i play guitar AND guitar hero. we’re not delusional. we know the difference.
June 6th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Actually, i’ve heard that many real guitarists can’t get the hang of Guitar Hero. He’s probably wining about the game because he couldn’t get past easy…haha.

Anna– I din’t say it played like a real guitar. I said the certain songs for me are harder to play on the expert setting of guitar hereo than they are on a real guitar! I can play Clifs of Dover easily on a guitar, but I can’t get through it on guitar hero. Get your facts straight before you run your mouth!

Next, Shaq will be whining that NBA X-Treme 2008 for the PS3 doesn’t play like _real_ basketball.

What a douchebag. i swear this guy is not worth shit and yet just because he is Jen Aniston’s current sex toy he is suddenly news. noone the fuck cares. get over yourself.

I don’t think he understands what guitar hero is. you don’t make music asshole, you just push buttons collect points.
June 6th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
isn’t that the guy who charge people for autographs and pictures with fans? Yeah we should pay attention to this one. he is very moral and wise.
June 6th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Anna… get over yourself. again, IT’S A GAME! would he (and you), still be whining if you had a regular shaped controller rather than a controller SHAPED like a guitar? people understand when playing the game that it’s a toy and it isn’t real. it’s for entertainment purposes… chill the F out. getting worked up over nothing. might as well say “hey… instead of playing Grand Theft Auto, go steal a real car!”

This is ridiculous. John was SIMPLY trying to promote his passion - and that of every other musician, guitarist or not. He wasn’t looking down on guitar hero users, he was only trying to get his opinion on a game across: why settle for a cheap thrill when you can (for the same price if you buy a cheap squire strat + 10watt amp) start to experience the true joy that is music, and in this case, guitar. Our individual opinions don’t matter what-so-ever, john’s no more than mine, or anyone else’s - we just like to stir shit up with ppl in the spotlight because that is our sad human nature. John Mayer is not an asshole, John Mayer is not putting YOU down, he is simply expressing his opinion, and trying to encourage those people that like guitar hero to go th e next step and try out a real guitar, which is an even higher high. leave the guy alone
