Mariah vs. Leona
Mariah Carey says fellow pop star Leona Lewis doesn’t sound like her, sparking a potential feud between the two singers.
The chart-topping singer insists she “didn’t really hear any similarity” between Leona’s music and her own, and claims there will never be a “new” Mariah.
She said: “Honestly, there has been so many, ‘This is the new her,’ and I’m like, ‘Okay, show me the new her. Can she come and work for me and be my double?’
“And I’m not particular talking about this girl Leona, because I only heard her once and I didn’t really hear a true similarity, particularly in the style of music.
“It is what it is and critics have compared me to so many people who are not really singers, and they’re certainly not writers.”
Mariah says if she spent her time worrying about her chart rivals it would depress her.
She added to the Observer Music Monthly magazine: “If I was to focus on the comparisons and really dwell on that, it would bring me down so I just try to pray that I lose the sprit of jealousy, it’s not a good one – envy is a really powerful thing.”
Leona’s debut LP Spirit hit the number one spot in America last week.

Hm, well Leona isn’t the new Mariah. Leona is normal, she doesn’t have hissy fits if her staff haven’t stocked the hotel mini bar with Evian. Mariah really is a b*tch… but she’s hot so that’s ok.

I think Leona sounds more like Kelly Clarkson more than Mariah. Though, I can hear a little Mariah in her ‘oohs’ after the chorus.

Leona sounds a bit like old school Mariah, when Mariah could actually sing! Mariah lost her voice a long time ago. Leona has also been compared to Whitney – but there is only 1 Whitney Huston. NOBODY can sing like her.

I think it’s her range that is similar (though obviously not quite the same) to Mariah’s. I like Leona’s type of music better than alot of Mariah’s, though.

WELL MARIAH IS A LITTLE BIT CRAZY, AND I DON’T MEAN THE GOOD KIND OF CRAZY AND HER SONGS HAS NEVER BEEN BIG HITS!!!! SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE THE ONLY REASON SHE MAKES A NEW SONG IS THAT SHE CAN FOLLOW UP WITH A VIDEO AND SHOW OFF HER SKIN AND ATTEMPT TO LOOK SEXY. . .LEONA ON THE OTHER HAND IS A REAL GIRL WITH INCREDIBLE VOICE AND I THINK MORE PEOPLE CAN ASSOCIATE WITH HER SONGS AND LYRICS THEN MARIAH’S (WHICH A LOT OF TIMES ARE JUST CREEPY AND WEIRD!!!!!!).

Hold on everyone! Both ladies are very talented and have their own style. Yes Leona’s vocal range is similar to Mariah’s yet very different. It will be interesting to hear Leona’s vocal range in a few years after a few albums and additional training.
Mariah has a very loyal fan base including myself and i am open to hear other artists like Leona, Christina, Celine and so forth.
Lord knows we currently do not have any female “real” singers out there. Just a bunch of studio artists. It is refreshing to hear a young lady with natural talent.
You go Leona and i look forward to watching you grow as an artist.
