Rihanna’s proud father Ronald Fenty quit smoking crack after his daughter stumbled in on him while he was taking the drug 11 years ago. The singer was just nine when she caught her father in the act of getting high – and he knew that was the low he needed to hit to give him the incentive to quit.

Ronald Fenty, who was named in his daughter’s Grammy Awards acceptance speech earlier this month, is now clean and sober, but he’s still haunted by the memory of the day Rihanna saw him high.

He says, “I turned and looked her in the eye and instantly came back down. I saw her run for her mother… and then they both started to cry. It was the lowest point; life just stopped and I realized what a fool I had been.”

Fenty is now using his own drug past, which cost him his marriage and a relationship with his daughter as she grew up, to urge Rihanna to resist the temptation of drugs. He adds, “I sat her down and said, ‘Rihanna, don’t make the mistakes I did…’ I begged her not to do a Britney Spears or a Lindsay Lohan. She won’t go down the path I went down; she’s too smart.”
