I’ve seen 2 great movies in the last week or so…
I’ve gotten behind, and forgotten to talk about them! So here goes!

Last Thursday, Troy and I went and saw Sean Penn’s “Into The Wild”. I’m not going to go on and on, and give you my review. But if you’re interested, Rolling Stone wrote an amazing review that I agree with 100% here. It was an unbelievable movie. I was so moved by every scene. Sean Penn does an amazing job – and Emile Hirsch deserves an Oscar. Take a second to read that review, it’s pretty amazing.

On Monday I went and saw “The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.” I will say that the star of the movie is definitely NOT Brad Pitt, but Casey Affleck instead. I loved how the movie was filmed…it was beautiful to look at. I actually loved the movie, and I was really amazed at the performance Casey gave. He stole the show.
Out of the two movies, I would have to give Into the Wild an A+ and I would give Jesse James a B+. Haha, it seems so official.
Have any of you guys seen either of these?

I loved Into the Wild, and Emile was amazing. I was kind of expecting the cinematography to be more like Brokeback Mountain, ridiculously beautiful, so I was initially disappointed when it was not, but later I had the thought that the cinematography was more in keeping with what I think was the intention to keep this film very true to the real story. They really filmed at the actual locations instead of ‘hollywooding it up’ and i’d expect nothing less from Sean Penn.
I’m still not sure what the message was at the end. I might have to reread the book. What message did you get from it? I still don’t know if it’s depressing or hopeful.
Chris wanted to be free of material possessions but I think he also wanted to be rid of relationships. In the end it seems both of these things killed him. Be brave? But not too brave, because that’s stupid? Take risks but expect the worst? I don’t know. The soundtrack is amazing!
BTW i’m going to check out Sean Penn and Into The Wild writer Jon Krakauer on Sundance Iconoclasts next thursday. http://www.sundancechannel.com/films/500252350
More Penn posts please!
