Maggie Gyllenhaal gets so angry with photographers trying to take pictures of her baby daughter Ramona, she often “gives them the finger.” Gyllenhaal and her fiance Peter Sarsgaard welcomed Ramona into the world in October 2006 and the family quickly became targets for snappers, vying for exclusive pictures of the newborn.

And the star admits she is still struggling to come to terms with the invasion of privacy.

She fumes,

“I don’t want them to take my daughter’s picture, it really upsets me, I can’t bear it. They were so horrible when she was born. They tried to take pictures of me in labor as I was going to the hospital.

“They called the fire department on our building to get us to come outside when she was five days old. It’s silly to give them the finger, but we get so frustrated.”

Reese Witherspoon is to be honorary chairman of the Avon Foundation, a charity which supports women and their families.

Ms Witherspoon, 31, said she was “truly impressed” by the charity’s commitment to “providing economic and personal fulfilment” to women around the world.

Avon ladies have been selling products door-to-door since 1886.

‘Drive and spirit’

The firm has more than five million sales representatives in 100 countries, with an estimated eight million customers in the UK alone.

But growth has been harder to come by in recent years in a fiercely competitive market and the company has sought to reinvent itself.

In her new role, Ms Witherspoon will focus on initiatives on breast cancer, domestic violence and emergency relief for the Foundation – set up in 1955.

The arrangement, financial details of which have not been disclosed, will also see the actress become involved in product development and advertising for the brand.

“Reese is a perfect fit,” Avon chief executive Andrea Jung said of the star’s association with the brand.

“She clearly embodies the drive, commitment and entrepreneurial spirit that is at the heart of the Avon representative.”

Is Victoria Beckham already wearing out her welcome in Los Angeles?

Sources say she has made herself unpopular with management of the celeb-friendly, press-shy Chateau Marmont.

“She always lets the paparazzi know when she’ll be arriving,” wags a West Coast tongue. “The Chateau Marmont tries to give celebs their privacy, and they hate her there. They like David [Beckham, her husband], though.”

The splash she has made since arriving also seems to have upset some of the other swimmers in the L.A. fishbowl.

Last Tuesday, “Britney Spears turned up at the Chateau and the only table available was the one next to Posh,” laughs the snitch.

“But Britney didn’t want to sit next to her, so she and her friend stormed off to Il Sole instead.”
