Nicole Kidman = Box Office POISON

No matter how much money she’s being guaranteed for movies these days, Nicole Kidman had better start thinking twice about her legacy as an actress.
Her new one, “The Invasion,” opened Friday and bombed quite brilliantly. It took in a little less than $2 million. The price for this disaster? Over $100 million. And even though it co-stars James Bond actor Daniel Craig, nothing can make “The Invasion” into a hit.
What’s worse is, no one wanted even to see it in theatres. At boxofficemojo.com, a poll among subscribers showed almost no interest in “The Invasion.”
Of course, the marketing didn’t help. The movie looked like “The Stepford Wives II,” another Kidman disaster. And in many of the ads, Craig’s name wasn’t even mentioned. It was just Nicole Kidman, looking beautiful, running among dead eyed weirdos.
The public smelled a rat, Warner Bros. punted, and the rest is history.
Kidman was riding high in her career at one point with hits like “The Hours,” for which she won an Oscar, “The Others,” and “Moulin Rouge.”
But lately her choices of projects have been disastrous. From “Stepford” to “Bewitched” to “Fur,” “Birth,” “Dogville,” “The Interpreter,” and her misguided work in “Cold Mountain,” Kidman has made one bad decision after another. What it shows is a lack of direction, and no one to manage or guide her.
There may be hope, though: Kidman and Ralph Fiennes have just signed on to star in “The Reader” for Weinstein Co. But in the meantime, Kidman will appear in Baz Luhrmann’s epic “Australia” and sooner, Noah Baumbach’s “Margot at the Wedding.” She needs not only a commercial hit but a critical one to re-establish her position as the best actress of her generation.

There are dozens of people involved in making a movie, why are the actresses the ones that always get labelled box office poison?

I think N. Kidman is ok…
I tried watching Dogville, and after 20 minutes I gave up hope of understanding exactly what the hell was going on….

This a really mean-spirited piece. Anyone who has been following the story of this filmaking trainwreck would know the movie was destined to be stillborn on opening day regardless of what actress was in the lead role.

The reviews were scathing, not just Nicole’s performance, they trashed the quality of the writing and the fact that it ripped off “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” The other thing with the reviews were, they went on and on about her botoxed face. I’m not a Nicole fan and never understood the fascination with her however, the reviews were mean and so very personal I felt bad reading some of them.

You said:
“…re-establish her position as the best actress of her generation.”
Re-establish???
I always thought she was the Sienna Miller of the early 90’s, back when she was a gawky useless flytrap in “Flirting” with a REAL actress - Thandie Newton!
Just because she took the courageous step of being Tom Cruise’s gay beard (ALLEGEDLY!) does’nt mean we have to watch her vomit on celluloid repeatedly over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and… oh, you get it.
Speaking of which, VOMIT on her so-called “career,” and to the end of it.
Ah, better…

She was awesome in other movies like The Hours and Birth.. She just got stuck with some crappy scripts.. Look at Angelina Jolie.. everyone thinks she’s fabulous and her movies have bombed too. Most time it’s not the actors it’s the writers!

She’s always been a horrible actor. Why Hollywood wants her name is beyond me.

The only GOOD movie I ever saw Nicole in was her first flick, an Aussie one - Dead Calm. Ever since that, she has truly sucked in everything. She cannot act very well people - face it!

Just wait until The Golden Compass is released.
Same Kidman/Craig pairing but much better material.

she was great in Dead Calm …these days not so good. alhtough i still kind of like her, she seems like she could possibly be a sweet person in comparison to most celebrities.

Kat,
Her fisrt flick was, “BMX Bandits”, one of my favorite bad movies. Been crushing on her ever since. As for Invasion, i was entertained. the movie kept me from thinking about my laundry to do list. The reviews say it is a ripoff of invasion of the body snatchers, um…DUH! I thought it was on par with Philip Kaufman’s 1978 version and loads better than the 1956 crap fest.

I am not surprised. Anyone who would marry Tom Cruise and then marry Keith Urban has serious issues.

Angelina, Halle and Nicole are all on the same boat. Just because you win an oscar doesn’t mean every movie you churn out is gonna be a hit. And yea you can’t blame it all on the actors but they do make up 70 percent of the film. The writing coul dbe crap but if it’s performed well it makes the actor and ACTOR.
