Streep, Close & Streisand Vie For ‘Sunset Boulevard’ Role

Meryl Streep, Glenn Close and Barbra Streisand are fighting to play Sunset Boulevard diva Norma Desmond on the big screen, according to Hollywood reports. The ladies are reportedly on a shortlist being considered by Andrew Lloyd Webber, who composed the music for his version of the 1950 film classic.
London’s Daily Telegraph reports all three stars have been in discussions about taking on the role of Desmond, played famously by Gloria Swanson.
Close played the role onstage in Los Angeles and originated the role on Broadway, while Streisand has recorded versions of Sunset Boulevard ballads As If We Never Said Goodbye and With One Look.
Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman are reportedly favored for the role of screenwriter Joe Gillis in the musical remake.
Who do you think the role should go to?

Glenn Close is the best acttress of the trio but that’s just my opinion. and she’s also the one who appears to be the most down to earth and the coolest, I don’t know but I always get kind of ‘holier than you’ vibes from Meryl Streep and Streisand is a total diva. Go Glenn!

Glenn Close – hands down….
This woman is a fabulous actress and this would be a wonderful part for her. Meryl wouldn’t be bad either, but no one in hell could Streisand do it…although she does know what its like to be a bitter woman in Hollywood.

My absolute first choice would be Meryl. She would OWN that role.
Second choice would be Glenn.
eh to Streisand.

Glenn Close. She’s already done it on Broadway, so you know she can sing her head off. And there’s an old, sort of unattractive vibe to Norma Desmond that Meryl Streep is just too pretty for. Besides, she had The Devil Wears Prada. Let Glenn have a turn at the scene-chewing.
As for Joe Gillis, Ewan all the way. Joe is sort of waify and weasely. Hugh Jackman is too manly.
Hi, I’m JuicyDirt and I’m a musical theater nerd.

Glenn Close would be perfect for that.

Glenn Close…I saw Meryl recently in the movie, EVENING–I wouldn’t even call that acting!! Besides, I saw G.C. recently on Letterman–and popi, you are right. Glenn is VERY down-to-earth! Told some GOOD stories–showed a photo trekking ‘cross the world with her hubby–WITH a broken ankle! She ROCKS

Yahh, Glen Close is perfect for that role.

I’ve met Glen, she’s really down to earth and fun. I’d love to see either Meryl or her… they’re both phenominal!! But, NO NO NO to Babs! I’d rather watch my dog take a crap for 2 hours!

As much as I would love to have streep play that role, she doesn’t have the explosive emotional acting like Close. Meryl’s voice is too meek for this role. Glenn, you could imagine being close to the point of insane camp acting, but never being over the top. As for babs, well, her behavior as of late is the only indication that she can play that role. Its would take much for Barbra to fit in those shoes, but I can just imagine the singing, it would be two different tones of voice for the character.

Glenn Close, hands down. I’m not a fan of Meryl. I’ve watched her in like two things, and I didn’t understand her appeal. Her accent and acting wasn’t that great. Glenn can do insane!!

Glenn Close hands down. She would be amazing in the roll- remember her as Cruella Deville? She’s GOT IT. Would be great.
Danny Devito would be awesome as the ex husband/butler and I think John Cusack would be PERFECTION as the lead.

Glenn Close and Hugh Jackman, you can’t go wrong with that pair
August 14th, 2007 at 5:41 pm
streisand, hands down.
August 20th, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Come on…no one could sing it as well as Babs…and be honest…at 65 she looks fantastic and could easily pass for younger…Glenn was great on broadway, but remember, her voice is now 10 years older too…and it wasn’t great to begin with…Streep, forget about it…What about Streisand and Cruise???

Guys, it is a musical—you cant go wrong with Streisand when it comes to music—

steeisand is the only one other than patti lupone that could pull this off but the fact that she wants to direct produce no wonder weber considers streep and close

Glenn Close was nominated for Oscar for 5 times but had never won. It’s overdue. Let her play the role of Norma Desmond, and I’ll bet that she will give it all, and earn a place in the coming Academy Award. After all, she had won a Tony for her role, so this time – give the Oscar to her!

All 3 ladys are so good, it is not easy to say who to put in the role. But the one that can Sing it the best and can also act and can make people run to the movie house since it has been years since she has done a movie. Streisand is the pick. Close can not open a movie Streep can sing but can she sing THIS SHOW? Streisand is the only one who can do it all, Sing, Act, and open a film. I don’t see why this is even being talked about.

Barbra Streisand should get this part. she startet her karrier on broaway, and she MUST end her karrier on broadway. And pardon, she really has a voice…. She is THE VOICE
