Salma’s baby might be in danger!

 salma-hayek1.jpg

Salma Hayek’s pregnancy has been categorized as a high-risk pregnancy after having been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which doctors believe to be a result of her excessive weight gain combined with her being 40 years of age.

I hope everything turns out ok for both she and the baby! I knew she gained a lot of weight but I didn’t know she gained enough to put her in danger!

Please do some sort of fact-checking before you put stuff like this out there. Gestational diabetes has NOTHING to do with a woman’s age or the amount of weight she gains during pregnancy (although the diabetes can cause a woman to deliver a larger baby).

Here is some info I Googled — it took me all of about 10 seconds… you should try it sometime!

    ======================================================

“We don’t know what causes gestational diabetes, but we have some clues. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother’s insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother’s body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin.

When you have gestational diabetes, your pancreas works overtime to produce insulin, but the insulin does not lower your blood glucose levels. Although insulin does not cross the placenta, glucose and other nutrients do. So extra blood glucose goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels. This causes the baby’s pancreas to make extra insulin to get rid of the blood glucose. Since the baby is getting more energy than it needs to grow and develop, the extra energy is stored as fat.

This can lead to macrosomia, or a “fat” baby. Babies with macrosomia face health problems of their own, including damage to their shoulders during birth. Because of the extra insulin made by the baby’s pancreas, newborns may have very low blood glucose levels at birth and are also at higher risk for breathing problems. Babies with excess insulin become children who are at risk for obesity and adults who are at risk for type 2 diabetes.”

Thank you for the above comment. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes this morning, as a matter of fact. And due to constant nausea, I’m actually underweight for this pregnancy. Also, I’m 29.
I don’t know why I have it, but I can tell you that certainly explains how crappy I’ve been feeling lately. My sympathies, Salma.

Jesse D: I wanted to set the record straight because I had gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies (at age 33 and 35, respectively). Like you, LOST a ton of weight during the first trimester of both pregnancies because I was barfing so much — but this doesn’t have anything to do with gestational diabetes, either. I know women who had G.D. but felt great their entire pregnancies. My docs said I felt bad because the baby was taking everything good — some people experience this, other lucky ones don’t. And if you have it during your first pregnancy, you’ll probably have it with subsequent pregnancies…

After losing 12 lbs., I didn’t start gaining weight until my 5th month when the nausea subsided — but I want you to know I gave birth to beautiful, normal (albeit BIG), wonderful babies. They are 10 and 7 and do not have diabetes, nor do I (although I know I am at higher risk). SO HANG IN THERE! When you’re feeling bad it can make for a miserable pregancy but in the end it will all be worth it!

I know many young women of healthy weight who have had gestiational diabetes, myself included. From what I know the cause of gestational diabetes is unknown but there are some factors which put you at greater risk of it, but of course none of this is written in stone. As for having a huge baby, this is not always true, mine was a mere 6 lbs at birth. Other women I know also had average size babes.

Jesse D- I’m sorry you were diagnosed. If you can try to get a little exercise after each meal (a short walk…) I found a 15 minute brisk walk after meals was the best way to keep sugar levels down.

It’s a gossip blog: not the Encyclopedia Britanica. Lighten up on poor Joc…she’s just gettin’ us the dirt as fast as it’s available. If I want facts and accuracy, I’ll turn to FoxNews….oh wait, I mean, I’ll turn to Wikipedia…no, that’s not it either. What were we talking about?

  6. Danae Says:

gestational diabetes has more to do with the size of the foetus than the size of the mum. Its not known if a large foetus is a cause or effect of the diabetes, but in a large percentage of cases they are related

  7. Diabetes Blogger Says:

Gestational Diabetes is also linked with an increased risk of diabetes later in life.

I have a friend who had gestational diabetes when last pregnant.
She is skinny as a rake, gets plenty of exercise and has no history of diabetes in the family.

She has just turned 40 and has been diagnosed as diabetic.

Of course ‘linked with’ could mean many things - either way, fingers crossed for Salma
