Anne Hathaway in Marie Claire
Anne Hathaway’s godmother calls her when she curses in print, but that doesn’t stop her from letting some choice words fly in a new interview with Marie Claire.
In the mag’s August issue, the 24-year-old actress also explains why she went topless in the films Havoc and Brokeback Mountain, but famously passed on the lead role in Knocked Up (which later went to Katherine Heigl), and why she’s not as squeaky-clean as you think.
Interview excerpts below…
On bursting into tears during Brokeback Mountain:
“Didn’t stop for an hour. And Kirsten Dunst, who was going out with Jake, was like two rows behind me, and [Jake’s sister] Maggie Gyllenhaal was right behind me, and we were all crying so hard; my boyfriend offered Maggie his hankerchief, and she was sharing it with Kirsten. And I’m thinking, That’s my boyfriend’s – can I have my Kleenex that you b-tches are using?”
On not being a prude:
“I love [the band] Peaches. When people are all like, ‘Do you think you have a squeaky-clean image?’ I’m like, ‘Could a squeaky-clean girl know all the lyrics to ‘Teaches of Peaches’? I mean, my favorite song is called ‘F—k the Pain Away.’”
On watching Brokeback Mountain for the first time at the Venice Film Festival:
“I’m not in the movie until, like, 45 minutes into, and I start to get sick to my stomach that I’m gonna be the one to f–k it up. So before I came on-screen, I run outside, because I can’t handle it.”
On her image:
“I’m not a walking one-woman drama show. I’m pretty bad entertainment – I’m not particularly well dressed, and I haven’t graduated from college. I think you should like Natalie Portman a lot more.”
On her nudity policy:
“I don’t actively search for [movies] that I can get naked in. It’s not the most fun requirement of the job, but nor is it something that I would ever NOT do a job because of. It is what it is. Some people choose not to do it on moral grounds; I think that’s a shoddy argument. I turned down another movie because it was going to show a vagina – not mine, but somebody else’s. And I didn’t believe that it was actually necessary to the story.”

Actually I DO lot Natalie Portman a lot more…A LOT MORE.
She does sound like an idiot, almost all the time. And why does she keep trying to say “I’m not as innocent as you think” its like she doesn’t get that the drunken skank attention whores are a dime a dozen. But if the public thinks you’re sweet and innocent they’ll support you for a long time…like Reese Witherspoon

The movie she turned down was Knocked Up, which Katherine Heigl wisely scooped up. It showed an obviously fake vagina in the context of a woman giving birth and it actually added a very funny did-they-just-do-that moment to the movie. No one actually thought it was Katherine’s and no one would have thought less of Anne had she been in the role. It’s an awesome thing she didn’t take the part, however, since I never would have seen it if she was in and and Katherine Heigl made the movie. I guess it’s a good thing she thinks she’s so above a fake vagina shot. Especially considering I hear she’s all about the vagina in her private life…
