I haven’t posted in a couple hours, because I went to see a movie.

I make it a goal every year around this time to cram in all of the Oscar nominated movies.  I try to see all the movies in the major categories (that look half decent).  For example, I have NO DESIRE to see “The Queen,” I don’t care how great Helen Mirren is.

Last week I took the afternoon to go watch “Notes on a Scandal” with Kate Blanchett and Judi Dench.  Wow…that movie was AMAZING. I’ve decided that I’ll pretty much watch any movie that Kate Blanchett is in.  She’s an incredible actress.  Kate & Judy were both nominated for their performances – and if they don’t win…I will be completely SHOCKED

The movie was so well written that it’s obvious why it’s nominated for it’s screenplay.  It was released with little or no marketing – hell, I didn’t even know the movie EXISTED until it was nominated for 4 Oscars.  If you don’t mind subject matter that’s a bit – intense (to say the least), you should really run out to see this movie.  It was terrific.

BUT THEN…

Today, I decided to go see Will Smith’s Oscar nominated role in “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Let’s just say it’s a good thing I didn’t have a razor in my purse, cause I surely would have done myself in.

It was PAINFUL to watch, to say the least.  It was one HORRIBLE thing after another.  Sure, Will Smith is a good actor, and yes – he probably deserves his Oscar nomination.  But c’mon, could they have made the movie ANY MORE DEPRESSING!?

The only reason why I went to see the movie in the first place, was because I knew the ending (it’s a true story) and I thought – I’ll stick through all the “hard stuff” to get to the happy ending.  BUT HELLO the ”hard stuff” took 1 hour 50 minutes! They neglected to put ANY happy stuff in the whole friggin movie!?

I’m not saying it was a BAD movie…I just was praying for the film projector to break so I would have an excuse to leave the theater.  Maybe you guys liked it more than I did…I HATED it.

I don’t mind depressing movies… I just raved about “Notes on a Scandal” which is VERY DARK.  But Happyness was just too much.  You begin to think it’s all some sick joke God’s playing on Will Smith’s character (I don’t even remember his name).

People who refuse to see certain films don’t have a right to be shocked when other films lose to them.

  2. anonymous Says:

Um..yeh…Right there with you, AMUSED BYSTANDER! THE QUEEN was FANTASTIC–your loss!

  3. Jocelyn Says:

    I’m sure it’s good, I just don’t want to see it…

I’m with Anonymous – The Queen was excellent! It was probably the best film I saw that year. Ok, perhaps not something you have to see on the big screen, but maybe when it comes out on DVD?

  5. Elke Says:

Yeah, I’m sure the Queen is good too, but I just don’t feel like sitting through two hours of rehashing the days after Diana died. I mean, 10 years of Elton John singing the revised Candle in the Wind is bad enough. I hope it wins though; long live the Queen.

As for Pursuit of Happyness…I’m sorta there with you, Jocelyn. It did go on a bit and made me tear up alot. Thank god it finally ended and he became a millionaire.

  6. Emily Says:

Just a correction, the actress’ name is spelled Cate Blanchett, with a C, not K. :)

I personally loved Pursuit of Happyness. This movie was a true story, what were they supposed to do make up happy things to put in throughout the movie. Seeing all the horrible things that he had to go through just made the ending that much better. I cried and laughed throughout the entire movie.

I’m sorry you found the Pursuit of Happyness so depressing but it was based on a true story and that’s life sometimes … depressing ~ the rug can be pulled out from underneath anyone at any time and perhaps that makes people uncomfortable far more than they care to acknowledge ~ no it’s not sunshiney Hollywood but it still resonates ~ if you want Fairy tales rent Disney films ~

Wow, I can’t believe how upset some of you are getting… It was just MY OPINION. I deleted a bunch of comments from someone named Clara – because she was getting just downright MEAN. Anyways – Clara – you won’t be able to comment on ICYDK anymore AT ALL. You’ve been blacklisted. Go start your own site, and fill it up with whatever you want. I can’t imagine why you got so hateful over me simply putting my OPINION here.

Again – if you guys read my post, I said that I’m sure it was a good movie, I’m not disputing that. I just said that I DIDN’T LIKE IT. I can’t see what the big deal is about that.

  10. Angel Says:

Sure, Pursuit of Happyness could seem very dark, but if you ignore his perseverance and the unconditional love between he and his son, then maybe you missed the point. The movie should be a reminder that no matter what you’re going through, there are so many others who are in worse situations. Try to see the positive side to the movie and you’ll love it.

wow everyone lay off jocelyn. if you have such a problem with her opinions than don’t read her site.

Kelli, you’re my new favorite person. Lets be BFF.

My friends and I call this kind of stuff PMP – short for Poopy Moon Phase. It’s that time when everyone seems to be acting wacky, has a short fuse etc. Evidently, it is PMP right now.
